Cupcake Basics: Ingredients

Cupcake Month is a series of posts dedicated to- 31 Days to a Better Cupcake: Everything You Need to Know About Making & Decorating Cupcakes!
After the pans and liners comes the ingredients to making a cupcake. For your most basic cupcake recipe, you typically need the following:
- Flour
- Sugar
- Butter or oil
- Eggs
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Milk
- Vanilla Extract
Most cupcake recipes will call for granulated sugar; butter or oil can be used depending on the recipe; eggs are another cupcake recipe staple and can be divided into egg white and/or egg yolk, so you can use either part or all of the egg. Baking powder and baking soda serve as leavening agents and some recipes will use both, while some will call for only one leavening or rising agent.
Yet some more recipes will call for milk. In the West, you can easily find liquid or gallon milk, but if you’re in Nigeria or Africa, you can just use powdered milk and add water to it. Vanilla extract is simply to add flavor and you can use either real vanilla bean sticks, real or imitation vanilla extract.
