Date Night: The Mid 20′s Nigerian/African

October 17, 2009 | Leave a Comment!

If you remember a while back, I had a small poll going on the side asking what folks wanted to see more of. If I remember correctly, the most popular was ‘Nigerian dishes,’ and after that was ‘Date Night dishes.’

So this post, will be a test of that, just to see what works. So say you’re dating a Nigerian and you not quite sure what to cook, this test post might be of some help.

Let’s create a scenario, shall we. Say dude is a Nigerian male in his mid twenties, sort of ‘aje butter’ type of guy, been in the States or London for a minute, has a slight British/American accent going and of course, some sort of ‘efizi’ or swag for lack of a better word.

He acknowledges his Nigerian side, but leans more to either the British/American way of life and wouldn’t be caught dead in public wacking/eating eba or pounded yam with his hands (at least not in the presence of ms.lady while he’s just getting to know her, amongst his boys though or after he’s known you for a while, omo, for sure ni yen o/ it’s a given)

That’s our dude and this is a guess of what he might like to eat. You, Ms. Lady, have the task of whetting his appetite with some appetizing dish to show off your cooking skills and decide to come up with a three course meal; appetizer, main dish and dessert. (Likewise, this would also work if you’re a dude cooking for your lady)

Appetizer: Miniature Meat-Pies

Main Dish: Jollof Rice w/ fried plantain & choice of meat

Beverage to go w/ meal: Zobo

Dessert: Fruit Salad w/ whipped cream or ice cream of choice

For the meat pies, make them much smaller using your smallest bowl or heart shaped cookie cutters and follow the basic recipe. For the dessert, serve in a wine/margarita type glass, fruit on the bottom and whipped cream/ice cream on the top.

No need to order from some fancy place and claim you cooked it, make it yourself! Set out candles and what not on your dining table and make it a night to remember!

(I’ll try to do the dishes over at some point and have pictures better depicting the setting etc, in the interim, hope this works for someone!) Next up (at some point) will be our dude in his late 20′s and mid-30′s

Enjoy…
